Spirituality is defined as a search for a belief in a greater existence or meaning outside of humankind. Many medical professionals are hesitant to use it in the overcoming of addiction and other disorders because they know that there are varying religious beliefs that may cause controversy in the healing process if spirituality is emphasized. However, spirituality can transcend religious beliefs and research has shown that it can be effective in helping people move on with their lives.
Spirituality can refer to religious beliefs, but it is also linked to internal awareness, happiness, and a connection to others. It can be practiced in religious rituals, but there are many other ways to practice that are not linked to religion. These include yoga, meditation, volunteer work and more.
Having a good spiritual outlook can help those suffering from disorders in many ways. It can help them become more optimistic, have a stronger sense of self-worth, and feel more peaceful in relation to the world around them. It can help relieve feelings of emptiness, anxiety, and low self-esteem which are often linked to addiction and other mental disorders.
At AMS, we believe spiritual counseling can be effective for many of our patients. We work closely with Ken Richter, an ordained Christian minister, who has served as a pastor in churches for over 25 years. He also has experience as a hospice chaplain and an individual and family spiritual counselor.
Although Richter’s background is in the Christian faith, he has dedicated much of his life to gaining an understanding of different religions. He has worked with professionals of other faiths which has given him the insight to understand the issues faced by people of various religious backgrounds. It is this understanding that helps him to adapt his counseling and be open-minded to all of the people he works with.
Spiritual counseling can help a person suffering with a disorder find a deeper meaning in life that can give them the motivation to heal. If you feel this level of spirituality can help you or someone you care for, we recommend you contact our offices to find out more about the services we offer. No matter what your beliefs may be, we can help you find the strength you need to find a happier, healthier quality of life.
