A personality disorder is defined as any sort of behavior ingrained in a person’s personality that causes them to deviate from the norm in such a way that it interferes with their daily functioning. It can affect the way they think of themselves and control their behavior and the way they respond and relate to other people. There are several types of personality disorders including antisocial personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and paranoid personality disorder to name a few.
Because personality disorders can be so varied, it is essential to take a customized approach. At AMS, we determine what type of personality disorder a person is dealing with and the underlying cause of the disorder. Then we come up with a plan that may include medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes to help the individual stabilize so that they can form healthier relationships and become more productive overall.
Group therapy can be effective in the treatment of behavioral and mental disorders, substance abuse issues, marital issues and more. Not only does it give a patient an opportunity to communicate and express themselves, but it also lets them know they are not alone. It provides a support group for the individuals involved. It provides an outlet for socialization and a forum for different views to be introduced. All this is valuable in helping patients to learn, grow and increase their own self-awareness.
