If you have been researching treatment options for depression or other mental health conditions, you may have learned about transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy. TMS is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain associated with mood regulation. It is an option for people who have not responded well to traditional treatments such as medication or talk therapy.
So, how much does TMS therapy cost? On this page, we discuss the costs involved to help you prepare for your journey toward better mental health.
The cost of NeuroStar TMS therapy can vary significantly, depending on factors such as the number of sessions required, geographic location, and insurance coverage. On average, a single session may cost between $400 and $500, while a full course of treatment, typically 30–36 sessions, ranges from $12,000 to $15,000.
Though this may seem like a substantial investment, many patients find the relief from depression and improvement in overall mental clarity well worth the cost. Additionally, insurance coverage or payment plans offered by some clinics can make NeuroStar TMS therapy more accessible.
Fortunately, many insurance companies now recognize the effectiveness of NeuroStar TMS therapy and cover eligible patients. Common criteria for coverage include:
To verify your coverage, contact your insurance company to determine if pre-authorization is required. Many NeuroStar TMS clinics, including ours, have staff experienced in navigating insurance policies and verifying benefits.
For those with insufficient insurance coverage, many NeuroStar TMS providers offer financial assistance programs or payment plans to help make treatment costs more manageable. Remember, your mental health is worth investing in.
TMS therapy is not only about symptom management—it is about long-term quality of life. Unlike treatments that provide only temporary relief, NeuroStar TMS often leads to lasting improvements in mental health, allowing patients to feel themselves again.
Over time, TMS can even be cost-effective compared to ongoing medication or therapy, as it addresses the root causes of depression in the brain. Many patients require reduced maintenance therapy after completing their NeuroStar TMS treatment course.
