You may be asking yourself: Is NeuroStar TMS therapy safe? The short answer is, yes. NeuroStar TMS is not only a highly effective treatment to help you manage your mental health, but it is also considered to be very safe. Backed by a wealth of clinical research, NeuroStar TMS could be a safer treatment option compared to antidepressants and other medications. Learn more about the safety and side effects of TMS therapy and speak to our compassionate specialists at AMS Health & Wellness to discover if it is right for you.

What Makes NeuroStar Advanced TMS Therapy a Safe Treatment Option

NeuroStar Advanced TMS therapy is considered safe, backed by a wealth of clinical research. It is a non-invasive treatment that targets highly specific brain areas without affecting the rest of your body. This FDA-cleared treatment is administered by trained medical professionals, making it a trusted alternative to other treatments—one of the many reasons why NeuroStar Advanced TMS is considered to be the number one doctor-recommended treatment of its kind.

According to well-researched and documented clinical evidence, NeuroStar TMS is effective for patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and MDD with anxious depression when used as intended in the clinical setting. At AMS Health and Wellness, our clinical professionals, including highly-qualified TMS technicians, deliver this treatment with your comfort in mind—for most patients, TMS is a painless and comfortable experience. However, some patients may experience mild side effects, such as scalp tingling or headaches, which tend to be mild, temporary, and easily managed with pain relievers.

What Sets NeuroStar TMS Apart From Other Treatments?

NeuroStar TMS is a safe and effective treatment for depression and OCD, especially when compared to other options like medication and traditional therapy. For example, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is beneficial for many, but it requires consistent sessions over time, and progress can be slow. NeuroStar, on the other hand, delivers fast results for many people. Each session is typically about 20–30 minutes, and most people begin to notice improvements after a few weeks. Additionally, medication can cause common side effects such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Sleep problems
  • Sexual dysfunction

NeuroStar Advanced TMS, however, has not been found to produce systemic side effects. What sets NeuroStar TMS apart from many other treatments is its non-invasive nature. Unlike surgery or other invasive procedures, it is performed while you are awake and alert with little discomfort—meaning there are no cuts, no anesthesia, and no recovery time.

Adult Indications for Use

The NeuroStar Advanced Therapy System is indicated for the treatment of depressive episodes and for decreasing anxiety symptoms for those who may exhibit comorbid anxiety symptoms in adult patients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and who failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from previous antidepressant medication treatment in the current episode.

The NeuroStar Advanced Therapy System is intended to be used as an adjunct for the treatment of adult patients suffering from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Important Safety Information

The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site. These events are transient; they occur during the TMS treatment course and do not occur for most patients after the first week of treatment. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with the use of TMS therapy (<0.1% per patient).

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy should not be used with patients who have non-removable conductive metal in or near the head. NeuroStar Advanced Therapy has not been studied in patients who have not received prior antidepressant treatment.
