All of us experience depression every once in a while, but for some, the emotions we feel can be debilitating, interfering with our daily lives, and even manifesting as physical pain and illness. Medication and counseling can be effective in treating depression, but recently, an easy and innovative treatment has emerged which may provide complete remission.

TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) targets key areas of the brain that are underactive in people with depression. Here’s a bit about how it works.

During TMS treatment a coil device is applied directly to the head. It contains a magnet that is similar in strength to that of an MRI machine. It sets off magnetic pulses that stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain thought to control mood providing a positive effect on the brain’s neurotransmitter levels making remission possible.

The therapy sessions are conducted in your doctor’s office. Patients are awake during treatment and that can return to normal activities right away. There are no negative effects on memory or sleep and the treatment is covered by most insurance plans.
