Living with major depressive disorder (MDD) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can feel isolating, especially when your symptoms continue despite receiving treatment. This can leave you feeling frustrated, tired, or uncertain about what to try next. NeuroStar transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy offers a non-invasive option designed to target the underlying brain activity associated with these conditions.

At AMS Health & Wellness, we work closely with you to identify treatment strategies that support your long-term improvement. During your initial consultation, we will discuss the conditions treated by NeuroStar TMS therapy in Sugar Land and provide you with a recommendation that fits your physical and mental health needs.

How Does NeuroStar TMS Therapy Work?

NeuroStar TMS therapy uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the specific areas of your brain involved in mood and behavior. A padded coil placed next to your head delivers these pulses, while a computer controls and directs them. We administer NeuroStar TMS therapy during short outpatient sessions, typically five days per week over several weeks for the full treatment cycle. To achieve the best results, you must complete your full treatment plan.

Because this treatment for certain mental health conditions does not involve medication, NeuroStar TMS therapy may be an option for many patients in Sugar Land. Some people consider TMS for their mental health conditions if they experience side effects from medications, have not responded to previous treatments, or want to try an alternative to prescription medications.

Major Depressive Disorder

MDD is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Symptoms of depression can include sadness, irritability, fatigue, and difficulty enjoying activities you once valued. These symptoms affect how you function every day and often require professional treatment. The FDA has cleared NeuroStar TMS therapy for adults with treatment-resistant depression, a diagnosis that occurs when patients in Sugar Land have not found relief for their condition after trying two or more medications.

Stimulating targeted brain regions may help improve the neurological communication between cells, leading to better mood regulation. You may begin to notice small changes, such as improved motivation or increased energy, before experiencing more significant emotional improvements.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

OCD involves persistent thoughts and repetitive behaviors that can interfere with your daily responsibilities. These symptoms often create stress, frustration, and reduced productivity for Sugar Land patients that NeuroStar TMS could help mitigate.

The FDA has also cleared NeuroStar TMS therapy for adults with OCD. By focusing on the brain circuits involved in compulsive behavior, treatment has been found to help decrease the urge to perform repetitive actions linked to the disorder and reduce anxiety associated with intrusive thoughts. Reducing symptoms allows you to spend more time focusing on relationships, work, and personal interests.

Depression With Anxiety Symptoms

When you are living with depression, you may also experience symptoms of anxiety. These symptoms include feelings of restlessness, tension, or overwhelm, and can make it harder to function at home or at work.

NeuroStar TMS therapy may help reduce anxiety symptoms in Sugar Land individuals receiving care for conditions such as MDD. Improving your mood and emotional regulation can support better sleep, clearer thinking, and improved daily functioning.

Important Safety Information

The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site. These events are transient; they occur during the TMS treatment course and do not occur for most patients after the first week of treatment. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with the use of TMS therapy (<0.1% per patient).

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy should not be used with patients who have non-removable conductive metal in or near the head. NeuroStar Advanced Therapy has not been studied in patients who have not received prior antidepressant treatment.
